This unit is a science and research based unit.  The beginning activities introduce students to the physiology of the brain and its development throughout the ages.  Students learn about themselves and what their own brains may look like by participating in several problem solving activities.  Students are exposed to modern brain theories such as multiple intelligences, left brain - right brain, and the psychology of thinking styles and learning styles through activities that are multi-disciplinary.  This unit is filled with critical thinking and creativity. Brain teasers include science, math, word play, and logic.

Essential Questions:

  • How does learning about the nervous system help one understand his/her unique capacity to learn, think, and feel?
  • Why are function of the different parts of a neuron important?
  • Why are functions of the different parts of the brain important?
  • How do humans learn?
  • How do the senses affect the human brain?
  • How does learning about the brain alter behavior?
  • How does the brain impact learning?
  • What characteristics are seen in "great brains"?

You are a famous neuroscientist/surgeon who has several patients you help around the world.  Your task is to select one of the medical choices listed below  and investigate (research), analyze (summarize), and communicate (present) your medical finds to famous doctors at an international neuroscience conference.  Good luck.

CHOICES:

  • A Great Brain
  • A Brain Disease
  • A Brain Injury
  • How Do We Learn?
  • How Does the Brain Work?
  • Choice

Note: While you are researching your very important medical case, you will report to the medical community your interesting discoveries (answers to class BQs) .
