What is Target?

Target is Cobb County's Accelerated Learning Program for gifted students.  In elementary school, students attend Target as a pull-out program one day each week.  The program is designed to meet the very specific needs of these students and extend competencies in the areas of cognitive skills, learning skills, research and reference skills, communication skills and metacognitive skills beyond the experience of the regular classroom.

What are the qualifications for Target?

To be eligible for gifted services, the criteria must be met in three of the following four areas, or psychometrically through qualifying test scores only in areas 1 and 2.

1. Mental Abilities- K-2 grades = 99% ....  3-12 grades: 96% on nationally normed test
2. Achievement- 90% on total reading, total math or composite on nationally normed test or superior student-generated product or performance.
3. Creativity-90% on nationally normed test or standardized creativity scale or superior student- generated product or performance.
4. Motivation-90% on a standardized motivation scale or superior student- generated product or performance.

Will my child have to be retested every year?

No, however they must meet the Continuation Criteria.  Criteria for continued placement shall include satisfactory
performance in both regular education and gifted classes, as well as provisions for a probationary period.

When are children tested for the Target program?

Testing Schedule 2005-2006
First Grade: county wide testing in Fall
Second and 4th Grade: Students who are new to the county
Third and Fifth Grade: countywide testing in the Fall

What is the Target Curriculum?

Gifted services must meet Quality Core Curriculum objectives while providing differentiated curriculum based on the assessed needs of the students.  This gifted curriculum includes a more elaborate, complex, and in-depth study of major ideas, problems and themes than would ordinarily be available in the regular classroom.  The curriculum blends instruction in math, science, social studies and language arts into units that examine central themes, issues, problems and topics.

Continuation Criteria

A student must:

  • Maintain satisfactory progress, defined as E, G, O, or S in grades K-3 (reading, English, mathematics, science and social studies) and as a minimum average 80% in grades 4-5 in the core subjects of reading, English, mathematics, science, and social studies.

  • Demonstrate at least 14 out of the 20 assessment indicators on the Target Progress Report.
